该剧聚焦卡桑德拉·奥斯汀（凯莉·霍威 Keeley Hawes 饰）早年和晚年的生活，围绕着文学之谜展开——卡桑德拉为何烧掉了她的妹妹简·奥斯汀（帕齐·费伦 Patsy Ferran 饰）和密友伊莱莎的信件。 故事始于1830年，简·奥斯汀去世多年后，卡桑德拉受已故未婚夫的兄弟临终所托，帮助安顿侄女伊莎贝拉（露丝·莱斯利 Rose Leslie 饰），让伊莎贝拉随姐姐居住。卡桑德拉借此机会找寻简的一些信件，她担心这些信如果落到了好事者手中，毁掉简的名声。。Two young men (Jon Cryer, Rick Stear) who have been friends since early childhood decide to go on a trip to find a third friend (Rafael Baez) who has long since disappeared. Stories they have heard indicate that the friend has been seen in an apparently rambling, incoherent state at Coney Island. Their trip leads them to a number of adventures involving the otherworld-like life...。
