大明正德四年，原浙江巡抚衙门镇抚司总捕头佟林，天涯寻妻来到古北口。路见不平，痛揍秦岭五虎，救下名医麦青山、雕玉巧手麦玉芝父女、卖货郎燕三以及前往县衙上任的件作刁五门。佟林把捕获的五虎首恶送进县衙大牢，与当地捕快于翰东、雷大力、程咬银起了冲突，幸得悦来客栈的海大娘和海棠母女周旋，双方不打不相识。 当晚秦岭五虎劫狱，逃至麦家，强要神医治伤。佟林赶到麦家，一剑单挑力擒众虎，麦玉芝被他深深吸引。曾住悦来客栈的一名神秘女客失踪，佟林疑心是自己的妻子，四下寻找，发现她己变成无头女尸。知县胡原为女尸案开庭，冤枉了不少人，幸得佟林为大家脱罪，古灵精怪的海棠也爱上了佟林。 佟林山间寻访，找到带有血迹的单刀一把，此刀属于贪财好色的捕快程咬银。京都沼狱锦衣卫衙金事葛天仪也来到悦来客栈，他对神秘女客也很感兴趣，便悬赏二百两找寻女客头颅，并四处打听一把精雕玉扇下落，引...。In this bitingly satirical film Peter Slovan, a continuous source of trouble for the film functionaries of the socialist Slovakia, tackles an evergreen topic – the corruptive effects of power. Barnabáš Kos, a triangle player at a symphonic orchestra, is suddenly promoted to serve as the head of the said institution, even though both he and his superiors deem him completely unfit for the task. Encouraged in equal parts by this unexpected recognition and the servile praise of his colleagues, Kos’s modesty starts to gradually vanish. The erstwhile bashful and aloof percussionist quickly becomes aware of the advantages of his new office, and begins to realise his increasingly ludicrous artistic ambitions. Ultimately, the submissive marionette turns into a source of public humiliation, and his astonishing career finds an abrupt end. Orchestra serves here as a microcosm that grotesquely reflects the absurd and tragicomic mechanisms of the paranoid apparatus of power.
