该剧改编自作家李娟同名散文集。生长在阿勒泰的汉族少女李文秀（周依然饰）一心在大城市中追求文学梦想，却屡屡碰壁被迫回到老家与开小卖部的母亲张凤侠（马伊琍饰）相依为命。在结识哈萨克少年巴太（于适饰）之后，文秀渐渐发现了当地之美。。故事设定在1847年，一支英国皇家海军探险队试图在北极圈中寻找传说中的「西北航道」（Northwest Passage）。他们的船在途中遭遇一个可怕的掠食怪，这东西隐藏在船上，与惊恐的船员们展开一场「生存游戏」。与此同时，饥饿、坏血病与叛乱始终困扰着这支探险队。。Introverted Cameron, is desperately in love with his high school crush Diane.
