民国年间，时值中元节，太平县昏暗的戏楼正上演着一场给“阴山鬼王的阴戏”。恰逢警察局局长方敬儒（张子健饰）大寿，局长儿子派人搅乱了戏班子，强占戏院为其父贺寿，正当所有人沉浸在喜悦的气氛中时，一个熊熊燃烧的活人从戏台上空而降，像极了中元节鬼王被烧的场景，与此同时，台下的纸人和鬼王牌位竟也瞬间燃起，人们纷传是其惹怒了鬼王。方敬儒盛怒之下开始调查此事，奉天白事铺掌柜许四九（刘智扬饰）也被迫卷入其中。随着案情深入，故事主人公许四九见证了一桩桩悲剧，也终于找到了背后的答案……。A mature, intelligent high school student has a side job arranging "accidental" deaths (no 2 alike) of fellow students' parents.
